A native Tennessean and Tennessee State University faculty member, Michael earned his degrees from Tennessee State University and Illinois State University. He served as curator of the Hiram V. Gordon Gallery, is a founding trustee of the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, and was featured in "Visions of My People" at the Tennessee State Museum.

His traveling exhibition "Too Black Too Fast" was the featured exhibition for the Pegasus World Cup, and he has illustrated over 80 children's books.
